WORKSTATION MEMORY / STORAGE

Engineering Workstation Memory & Storage Sizing Guide

Size RAM and storage for CAD, simulation and engineering data using real project footprints, peak working sets, scratch space, version growth and recovery requirements rather than minimum software specifications.

Measure current project demand

  • Capture peak memory use on representative assemblies, simulations, compiles and data-processing jobs, not only idle application memory.
  • Measure active project size, local cache, temporary solver output and scratch files separately from long-term archive data.
  • Include operating-system, endpoint-security and collaboration-tool overhead before setting the workstation baseline.

Add controlled headroom

  • Choose a memory baseline that keeps representative peak workloads out of sustained paging and leaves room for concurrent engineering applications.
  • Reserve local SSD capacity for active projects, temporary files and recovery space instead of planning to operate near full capacity.
  • Use separate backup and authoritative project storage where required; a larger workstation SSD is not a substitute for governed backup.

Standardize the fleet

  • Define one or two supported memory/storage tiers around real workload classes rather than many one-off configurations.
  • Document upgrade paths and spare availability so systems can be expanded without replacing the whole workstation.
  • Re-measure the workload when software releases, model scale or simulation methods materially change.
