PCB Prototype Supplier Quote Normalization Guide

Compare PCB prototype and low-volume manufacturing quotes on the same technical basis, including stack-up, material, copper, finish, tolerances, testing, assembly scope, lead time and logistics.

Freeze the technical package

  • Issue controlled Gerber or ODB++ data, drill files, fabrication drawing, stack-up, board outline and revision identifiers from the same release package.
  • State material family, finished thickness, copper weights, surface finish, solder-mask requirements and critical tolerances explicitly.
  • For assembly, control BOM manufacturer part numbers, approved alternates, placement data and any programming or test requirements.

Normalize quote scope

  • Separate bare-board fabrication, stencil, assembly, components, engineering charges, electrical test, inspection, shipping and taxes or duties.
  • Compare quoted lead time from the same trigger point, such as approved files and component availability, rather than headline production days alone.
  • Record minimum order quantities, panelization assumptions, overage policy and re-order tooling charges.

Quality and acceptance

  • Define applicable IPC class or customer-specific workmanship requirements where relevant to the product.
  • Require traceability and inspection evidence appropriate to prototype risk, especially for critical dimensions, controlled impedance or supplied components.
  • Use incoming inspection and functional testing to validate the supplier before relying on price or scaling to repeat production.
