Learning path

  1. Start with continuity and Reynolds-number calculations.
  2. Identify the flow regime before choosing a friction-factor method.
  3. Use Darcy-Weisbach for major pipe loss with an appropriate Darcy friction factor.
  4. Add pump power and system-head checks for the operating case.
  5. Check NPSH and manufacturer data before equipment selection or operation.

Glossary

Reynolds number
A dimensionless ratio comparing inertial and viscous effects in a flow.
Darcy friction factor
The dimensionless resistance factor used in the Darcy-Weisbach pipe-loss equation.
Relative roughness
Pipe roughness divided by hydraulic diameter.
Head loss
Mechanical energy loss per unit weight of fluid, commonly expressed as a fluid-column height.
NPSH available
A suction-side energy margin above vapor-pressure head under the stated reference conditions.
Cv
A valve flow coefficient used with US customary liquid-flow relationships.
Kv
A valve flow coefficient commonly used with metric liquid-flow relationships.
Hydraulic diameter
A characteristic length used to apply internal-flow relationships to non-circular passages.
